An effort in creative undoing of the false indivi-dualistic self in order to get established as the true non-dualistic Self which is Satyam-Gnanam-Anantam Brahma(n). This is Moksha, Enlightenment or Self-Realization.
Self-realization or brahmavidya is not a one time experience or sudden epiphany or glimpse ! Usually it is projected like that. Self-realization is to completely forget the jivabhava or the idea that one is a person located in the body, as if it never existed ! Self-realization or brahmavidya is the most demanding vidya. Whoever is making it as a simple affair has certainly not gone all the way ! You can buy/sell experience but Truth cannot be bought or sold. Guru, scriptures and teachings are only mirrors. It is the student who has to diligently use the various mirrors till he finds his Self or Real swarupa.
“It is not a brahmavidya” is a colloquial usage in the sanatana dharma culture, to indicate the difficulty of a task. Brahmavidya is assigned the highest difficulty and the status of an almost impossible task because it is totally against the current of mainstream thinking and habits.

My mother used to say Brhmaprayatnam for a seemingly impossible task. Why is it called brhmavidya ? What is the Vidya required to realise the Self?
I think brahma prayatnam is more for wordly tasks like what Bagiratha did to bring Ganges to earth. Brahma vidya is to educate oneself to free from ignorance and realize Para Brahman or Moksha.
Is self-realization an event in time?
It seems so when you read about Jnanis who have documented their enlightenment and when it happened (ex: Bhagavan Ramana’s death experience and Sri Abhinava Vidyateertha Mahaswami). However, the moment you consider it as an event in time, the mind becomes restless seeking it, fantasizing about it, hastening itself to that event, like a dog chasing its own tail.
🙏. Brahmavidya means to realize that time and space, thoughts and sensations don’t have real existence. They come into being exactly like a dream, when there is association between pure consciousness and ignorance or mass of ideas. The awakening to Brahman depends on how strongly one is attached to the idea of being an individual located in body. The weaker it is, the quicker one will be awakened to Brahman or the only Reality behind the jiva and jagat !

Welcome. This moksha club is all about brahmavidya. I don’t know why you had to ask about it as if it is another special technique 🙂
